How to Replace an key audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, replace audi key Fob and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or Audi Keyless Go G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, Audi Key Fob it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or audi Keyless go an unfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi keys replacement cost because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. When this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor replacement key for audi is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common component across the audi keyless go 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.Porsche-New-2023.png
